Ask Why? Do we care? Can we Share?
Why?
Why, with all the education, the reasoning capabilities, is man still enslaved by religious ideologies and unwilling to think and question?
Afraid to breakaway and stand on his own feet. Is there still an underlying weakness, a fear of a bolt of lightening to punish the doubtful?
In Sri Lanka and perhaps elsewhere, there are places of worship established beside trunk routs where passers by are prompted to make a
small donation, ostensibly to insure a safe journey. Very few have the temerity to go past without adding to the till, although many of
them doubt that omission may make them prone to an accident. Participating more from fear than devotion. Most giving only because
they want something back.
Every crime, every violation creates a victim. More and more laws are enacted to strengthen prosecutors with the power to ensure that
offenders are punished. But what of the victim? Governing bodies spend large sums of money to punish offenders, but seldom if ever,
have provision to compensate the victim. How often do the courts share some of the heavy penalties with the victim?
No one violates those they respect, nor neglects those they care about. Respect for, or observance of human rights cannot be enforced by
threat of punishment nor induced by law. Laws are there to protect the innocent, That is the expectation but, in practice, weak laws and
the justice system have only aggravated the suffering of victims and never provided compensation. Is it not time we did something about
it?
The Selfless
A mother is the purest form of selflessness. Without and expectations of love, compensation, appreciation, reward or anything else,
mothers toil through their waking hours to carefor husband and children. There is no other model we canfollow to be selfless than a
mother.
It is always the selfless who are the happiest. Sharing themselves and their fortunes with others, they give their lives a dimension that
the selfish never perceive. The best we can do is to learn how and, position ourselves to avoid the adverse and to benefit from the
positive advantages and opportunities we can marshal. If we fail, we must each accept the responsibility for that failure and consequent
effect.
There is so much we do not know, so much out there we have yet to learn about. To think outside the box or stereotype. To open our
hearts and minds to everyone and everything around us. That is a part of freedom. “Norms are only of value in guiding those who
would act without thinking.
Norms are man-made and directed by society. In cannibal land it is a norm to eat one’s neighbor. Anything worth achieving is never
easy. The trick is to break each step into the smallest possible manageable portions and handle them. To improve the quality of life, not
just delay death. Bad is what we do inconsiderately and irresponsibly to hurt or harm others, especially those weaker than us. Life is to
be enjoyed, not suffered.
Goodwill does not come to you by chance. You have to earn or attract it. No one will turn to you without the promise that an object
or idea will satisfy a need they have.
We cannot change the world alone, we can change ourselves. However we cannot shrug our shoulders and let the rot continue. There
is no other alternative. If we all turn away from a wrong, there will be no one to stop the decline. Politicians by their trade cannot
remain clean.
With escalating prices imposed by successive governments in power, the poor keep getting poorer. An affluent minority because of their
education, their connections and their position exploit their power and resources to protect themselves. The poor go from poverty to
destitution, to crime and then to terrorism.
Political parties take power and go from bad to worse, lining their pockets, while sending the country headlong into bankruptcy. The
vote properly exercised can withhold power from those who were elected before but failed to deliver, sending a strong message. A new
man could not do worse. Strong voters can induce the public to be savvy enough to withhold their votes from candidates who fail in
their duties. The rot can be stopped.
The media must educate the public to be able to discern the rogues from the sincere. We need a strong media to come out and
encourage voters to exercise their franchise for the betterment of the local population.
